FAQ
Who is eligible to join Skies of Dreams?
Skies of Dreams is open to high school students. The program is open to students from Fresno and surrounding areas, as long as they have reliable transportation to the hangar each Sunday.
How are students selected for the program?
Students are selected through a combination of application review, qualifying responses, and interviews. If needed, a lottery may be used to finalize the group. We aim for a group of 15 students (maximum 20) to maintain a strong mentor-to-student ratio.
When do applications open for the next program?
The 2026 program is already underway. Applications for the 2027 program will open later this year or early 2027. Sign up for our mailing list to be the first to know once applications open. Also, check our website or follow us on social media for updates.
When and where does the program meet?
Students meet every Sunday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM (4-hour sessions with a lunch break) at the EAA Chapter 376 hangar: 4344 W. Spaatz Ave., Sierra Sky Park, Fresno, CA.
What is the full commitment for the program?
Students are expected to commit for the full duration of the project — through completion of the aircraft and receipt of its airworthiness certificate. Students who complete the program will also have the opportunity to fly in the plane they helped build!
Is the program free?
Yes. The program is completely free for accepted students. This includes all tools, materials, and instruction. There are no required costs for participants.
What kind of airplane are the students building?
Students are building a Van’s RV-12iS aircraft from kit to first flight.
Do students need prior experience or tools?
No prior experience or personal tools are required. However, students must pass a tool safety quiz during orientation.
What safety gear is provided?
All necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided for students.
What does “earn the opportunity to fly the plane” mean?
Students who complete the program will receive discovery flights and, in some cases, flight training may be included at cost!
Can parents or guardians volunteer or observe?
Yes. Parents and guardians are welcome to volunteer or observe, but they must first complete the EAA Youth Protection Training. Complete the training here: https://www.eaa.org/eaa/training/youth-protection-training
What happens if a student misses sessions?
As part of acceptance, students confirm their availability for the full year. Excused absences are expected, but continued unexcused absences are strongly discouraged and may result in the student being replaced from the waitlist at the discretion of the Skies of Dreams Mentor Leadership Committee.
Are you currently fundraising?
Yes, we are actively fundraising to support the program and keep it free for students. Donations make a big difference and are greatly appreciated. Donate at our GoFundMe in the menu!
What are the plans after this aircraft is completed?
Once this RV-12iS is completed and sold, the proceeds will help fund the next youth build project.
